Stop and Smell Your Friends

Eight years ago, my family bought a hibiscus bush. We have a great view of it from our kitchen table. It flowers almost all year, so much so I rarely notice its vibrant blooms.

I have known my sister-in-law for 15 years. She is one of the few adult women close to my age I interact with regularly. We have become staples in one another’s lives. She is adventuresome, generous, and kind.

Recently, we’ve become close friends. For most of the time we’ve been family, I have failed to notice how incredible she is.

I cannot imagine life without her, just like I cannot imagine a morning view without those hibiscus flowers.
